The Veilborn Chronicles · Book One
The Lost Tear & The Moon
by Raven Nguyen
Every hundred years the Veil between the mortal realm and the Court of Night grows thin, and every hundred years a Veilborn is sent through it with a dagger forged from starlight and a single purpose: end the Shadow King before his reign swallows the sun.
Ysolde Varre has trained for this her whole life. She knows the prophecy by heart, knows the weak point beneath his ribs, knows that no Veilborn has ever come home.
What she doesn't know is why the king looks at her like he's been waiting centuries, why his court whispers her name before she gives it, or why the blade at her hip hums every time he's near. As the Veil tears wider and old gods stir beneath the city, Ysolde must decide what she's willing to betray: her people, her heart, or the truth about the night she was born.

Chapter One
The throne room was colder than the stories promised. Frost feathered the black marble, and the only warmth came from him: the Shadow King, lounging on a throne of twisted thornwood as if he had all of eternity to watch me walk the length of his hall. Perhaps he did. “You’re late,” he said softly. “By about three hundred years.”
